20/20, No Glasses Required
Ortho-K can stop the progression of nearsightedness. Enjoy your day, without need for vision correction! Ortho-K is a non-surgical Gentle Vision Shaping System (GVSS) that uses contact lenses worn overnight to reshape the cornea.
Similar to a retainer used for Orthodontics, the lenses maintain a functional shape throughout the night, so that during the following day you can see—without glasses and contacts. Dr. Carlsson has worked with both children and adults to help them correct their vision with Ortho-K.
Attempts to re-shape the cornea have been tried since contact lenses were first fit. The process used to be called orthokeratology. This process would often take over a year to complete and the results were not nearly as favorable as GVSS. For this reason, many doctors and patients elected not to participate in orthokeratology. With the newer diagnostic technology used to measure the corneal shape and the newer materials being used for vision retainers, GVSS is now a viable alternative for many nearsighted and even for some astigmatism patients.
The total fee starts at $1,698 and varies based on the level of difficulty/chair time needed for a successful fit. The fee includes all the professional visits, retainer lenses, and any interim soft disposable contact lenses. Lost, broken or spare retainers are available at $248 for each eye.
First, a comprehensive eye health examination is performed. Next, a corneal topographer is used to obtain a very precise computerized “map” of the cornea’s shape. This information is placed into the GVSS computer software and a diagnostic retainer is fit in the office. It takes about one week for the retainers to be made and delivered.
When you pick up your retainers, you will be shown how to use and care for them. The maintenance is easy and involves just one bottle of solution. If the retainers fit properly, you may wear them that first night and you should see well with the retainers on. We will see you the morning after you wear your retainers. You should come to the office wearing your vision retainers. We will remove them for you. Of course, should you experience any problems while at home with your retainers, just remove them.
Most of the visual changes occur over the first few days. As the cornea changes shape and vision improves, we will refit and reorder successive vision retainers, if needed. During this interim period we will supply you with soft disposable contact lenses to be worn during the day. These are usually only needed for the first few days. For most patients, only one pair of retainers is needed.
The majority of patients achieve excellent vision in only a few days – many after only one night of wear. Even after you are seeing well, we will continue to see you to ensure your cornea is adapting to the retainers. Most patients are done with their follow up care in about one month. When treatment is completed, the last retainer used will be worn on a nightly basis. Some patients can use the retainers every other night.
No, and no. It does not work on every patient and needs to be performed in a very meticulous manner. We have received special training and have the necessary diagnostic equipment, computer software and expertise to perform GVSS.
The procedure works best on mild to moderate amounts of nearsightedness or astigmatism. Patients with more severe cases may have their vision improved, but will still need some vision correction. The procedure does not work well on certain shaped corneas. Generally, but not always, less nearsighted patients respond faster than more nearsighted ones. There are no age barriers for GVSS. It is safe for children and adults and is an excellent alternative for children who are just first becoming nearsighted. In fact, studies have shown that GVSS may prevent any further nearsightedness from occurring! Also, while success rates are very high, success cannot be guaranteed due to factors like the inability to wear the vision retainer for physiological reasons or other systemic health problems.
Yes. GVSS is less than half the cost of Laser Vision Correction Surgery. It does not involve any post-operative pain. Also, the hazy post-operative vision that can be associated with laser surgery does not occur with GVSS. GVSS allows both eyes to be treated at the same time. Also, there are no strong steroid or antibiotic drugs required, as there are for laser surgery. Lastly, GVSS is reversible, whereas laser surgery is not.
GVSS gives you freedom from contact lenses and eyeglasses during waking hours. This is ideal for sports enthusiasts or those who work in dusty, dirty environments. For others, the freedom from corrective lenses alone may be worth it. GVSS can also bring relief from problems sometimes associated with full time contact lens wear, like dry eyes.
GVSS stands for Gentle Vision Shaping System (traditionally known as Orthokeratology). It uses specially designed vision retainers to gently and gradually reshape the front surface of the eye (the cornea) to eliminate or reduce nearsightedness (myopia) or astigmatism. The retainers are comfortable and easy to care for.
Dr. Carlsson using Ortho-K method managed to stop progression of nearsightedness and even corrected vision to 100% for my daughter. This result is stable during passed 3 years of care and exceeded even the most wild expectations. My kid does not need glasses and has excellent vision since the second week of Ortho-K. Great job Dr. Carlsson, thank you so much for your attention, diligence and care.
I’ve been using Ortho-K lenses for two years and I totally enjoy this technology! With a few extra minutes in the evening, I can have a whole day without wearing glasses. I feel great and I don’t need to worry about damaging my glasses when doing sports. It gives me a lot of convenience. I also have to mention that Dr. Carlsson is amazing! He is fun, knowledgeable, and always gives thorough explanations during every visit. The staff in the office are very friendly and helpful. I’m so glad that I’m working with Dr. Carlsson and will definitely go on with my Ortho-K for as long as it needs.
